You have space above your fireplace for a 52" flat screen. Yeah, it's a nice big screen. Your plan is to put it over your fireplace, but before you do, take a piece of cardboard or framed piece of artwork the same size as the TV and place it over the fireplace. How does it look? Will any windows create glare on on the screen? Sit on the couch and see how much you'll want to tilt the screen to view it comfortably with it mounted way up there above your fireplace. Lastly, check out the slouch potato viewing angle, flatten out on the couch and see if you like watching the tv above your head.

A brief comparison of LCD, Plasma, HDTV, LED, OLED screens.

LCD TV:
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) televisions are thinner and lighter and the flat screen diminishes picture distortion.The viewing area is more narrow than that of a plasma screen but the backlighting used in LCD makes viewing easier with window and reflective light.

Plasma TV:
Think big. In comparision to an LCD, plasma corners the big screen market. The color is generally better, the contrast between black and white is brighter, and they have twice the viewing angle. The downside, plasmas also have a shorter life span than LCDs.

HDTV:
HDTV or High-Definition Television means just what it says; better definition in picture and sound quality.

LED TV:
LED (Light Emitting Diode) TV is simply a backlit LCD. It's very easy to install and the image quality is brighter. The energy consumption depends on the type of LED technology. Backlit LED's require more energy while edge-lit LEDs consume less.

OLED TVs:
OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) TVs depend on light emitting polymer technology. The term organic is ubiquitous after all, petroleum is organic. OLED screens have a faster refresh rate than LCDs, use less power, and have a greater color range. Thus far, the down side to OLED technology is the limited life span of the organic materials used, limits the life span of the TV considerably.
